How I Built an Amazing Work From Home Life — And How You Can Too

Work from home isn’t something I ever thought I’d pull off. But here I am — setting my own schedule, earning more than I did in my old 9-to-5, and writing this from wherever I happen to be that week.

If you’re stuck in a job you can’t stand, dreading the sound of your alarm on a Monday, I want you to know something: I’ve been exactly where you are.

For years I assumed working from home was for other people. The lucky ones. The tech crowd. I figured a “real” job meant a commute, a dress code, and someone checking up on you.

Turns out I was wrong. Learning to work from home changed my life completely — and it wasn’t a straight line to get here.

Before I went all-in on this blog, I had a 9-to-5 at an engineering company. Steady paycheck, sure. But I felt boxed in. The commute wore me down, I had zero flexibility, and I lived for Fridays. I remember that heavy feeling on Sunday nights, knowing Monday was coming whether I liked it or not.

My life now looks nothing like that. I build my own schedule, around my own days — not someone else’s. If I want to start early and knock off by lunch, I do that. If I want a random Tuesday off, I take it. That freedom changed everything for me.

I’ve also spent months at a time working from abroad, following better weather and a change of scenery. My laptop is my office. Some weeks that’s a beachside apartment, other weeks it’s a quiet café somewhere new.

Whether you want more time with your family, a life that isn’t tied to one location, or just an end to the morning rush hour — this guide is about why work from home is worth chasing, and exactly how to start.

Why I Love the Work From Home Lifestyle (And Why You Will Too)

Woman enjoying the remote work benefits of flexibility and freedom while working from home.
The biggest remote work benefits include more schedule flexibility, less stress, and greater control over your time.

There’s a lot to like about stepping away from a traditional job. But not every benefit hits the same. Some are nice-to-haves. A few are genuinely life-changing.

When I first made the switch, I thought the biggest win would be wearing comfy clothes and skipping the commute. Both true, both nice — but they’re the surface stuff. The real shift has been deeper: control over my time, the ability to build income in more than one way, and the headspace that comes from building something on my own terms.

Here’s what actually moved the needle for me.

Complete Flexibility Over My Schedule

This is the real prize of working from home: control over your time.

Let’s be honest — not every work-from-home job gives you total freedom. Plenty still want you logged in at set hours. But the best kind of remote income lets you build your day around your life, instead of the other way around.

That’s when it clicks.

Some mornings I start early while it’s quiet and I can focus. Other days I shut the laptop, go for a walk, grab a coffee without rushing, or run errands while the shops are empty — then work later in the afternoon.

There’s something genuinely freeing about deciding, on a whim, to take a long lunch. No approvals. No explaining yourself. Just your own choice.

Once you’ve had that kind of flexibility, it’s hard to imagine going back.

Taking Back My Time: No More Commuting

I used to spend at least an hour a day in my car. Not the calm, podcast kind of drive — the bumper-to-bumper, white-knuckle kind.

I still remember a 15-mile commute that turned into a three-hour crawl. Just brake lights and the clock ticking, my stress climbing the whole way. I was late, wound up, and painfully aware I was burning hours of my life sat in a metal box.

Now? My commute is a walk from my bed to my desk. Sometimes it’s a few steps to the kitchen with a coffee in hand.

Cutting the commute gave me back more than time. It gave me:

  • Time: Roughly five hours back every week — that adds up to over 250 hours a year.
  • Money: No more gas, parking, or “office wardrobe” spending.
  • Peace of mind: No traffic jams, no icy-road dread, no starting the day already exhausted.

When you stop commuting, you’re not just saving time. You’re getting a piece of your life back.

Unlimited Earning Possibilities

In a regular job, your pay usually has a ceiling. Maybe a small raise if the budget allows. Maybe a promotion every few years, if you’re lucky. For most people, that ceiling is fixed — and mostly out of their hands.

Build something of your own online, and that ceiling starts to disappear.

I’ve been building things online for a long time. I ran my own online shop for around eight years back in the early 2000s, then took a job running e-commerce for a company — until that company hit tax trouble and folded. Then came my cancer diagnosis, and the decision that I wasn’t going back to the 9-to-5 hamster wheel.

That’s really why this blog exists. I figured I had enough experience running websites to give it a proper go — and I needed a way to fund the move my wife and I are working toward. What started as a side project turned into a business I wasn’t just trading hours for.

I never expected to earn what I do now. Working from home opened up income that isn’t capped by a salary — affiliate marketing, advertising, digital products, assets that keep paying off long after the work’s done. The real difference isn’t luck. It’s how deliberately you choose to build.

The Freedom to Work from Anywhere

Working from home doesn’t mean you’re stuck at home.

Since my work is entirely online, I’ve built a life around freedom and change of scenery. I’ve spent months abroad, trading grey winters for sunshine when I could. I’ve noticed my own output improves when I feel good — and sometimes that just means changing where I’m sitting.

The only real requirement is decent internet.

With a laptop, I can run my business from almost anywhere — a beachside apartment, a café in Europe, a rental in a new city. Want to stretch your savings further somewhere cheaper? You can. Want to spend a month exploring a new country while you work? Also an option.

This life was never about being tied to a house. It’s about working from wherever actually works for you.

The Top Work From Home Jobs You Can Begin Today

Woman researching the best work from home jobs on a laptop in a bright home office.
Some of the best work from home jobs include blogging, freelance writing, virtual assistance, and selling digital products.

If you’re ready to make the switch, here’s where I’d point you. Some of these I’ve done myself. Where I haven’t, I’ll tell you straight — no pretending.

Worth knowing before you dive in: remote work isn’t a fringe thing anymore. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the number of Americans working remotely at some point during their week in the tens of millions — a share of the workforce that’s held steady for a while now. This isn’t a trend that’s going away.

1. Blogging

Blogging is one of my favorite ways to earn money from home. You build content, build an audience, then monetize through ads, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, and your own products.

It’s not a quick win. It takes time and a proper strategy — and I learned that the hard way. Early on I leaned too hard on AI-generated content thinking it would speed things up. Instead it tanked my rankings and got most of my pages deindexed. It took me about eight months of trial and error to dig out of that, because Google doesn’t exactly hand you a fix-it list.

Most people would’ve walked away at that point. I didn’t, because this is what I actually want to be doing when we make our move overseas — and once it does start working, blogging can turn into a real long-term income.

What I like most about it is the freedom to write about almost anything you care about — finance, travel, food, parenting, side hustles, you name it. There’s room to grow in nearly any niche.

If you want to start your own, I walk through the whole process in How to Start a Profitable Blog in 2026 (The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners) — everything from the technical setup to your first bit of income.

2. Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is one of the fastest ways to start earning from home — I haven’t done this one personally, but it’s worth knowing about because of how accessible it is.

Businesses, bloggers, and brands are constantly looking for content — blog posts, newsletters, website copy, captions — and they’ll pay for writing that’s clear and does the job.

You don’t need a journalism degree. Plenty of successful freelance writers started with none, built a simple portfolio, and landed their first clients through job boards or cold outreach.

Rates vary a lot depending on niche and experience — newer writers typically start lower per piece, and rates climb significantly with a track record and a specific area of expertise.

3. Selling Printables on Etsy

Printables are digital files people buy, download, and print themselves — planners, budgeting sheets, wall art, invitations, worksheets, calendars. They solve a specific problem or add a bit of joy, which is exactly why they sell.

I’ve bought more printables than I can count, especially the last couple of years — productivity planners, kids’ activities, home organization tools. They’re cheap, convenient, and instant. That instant part matters more every year.

What makes printables such a good income source is the scale. Make the product once, list it on Etsy or your own site, and it can sell over and over with no extra effort. No inventory, no packaging, no trips to the post office. Costs stay low, margins can be strong.

Build up a catalog over time and those small sales add up. Some sellers earn a solid side income from printables; a smaller number build them into a full-time business. With the right niche, real keyword research, and consistent products, it can become a dependable stream that keeps growing.

4. Virtual Assistant (VA)

Virtual assistants support businesses and entrepreneurs with everything from managing inboxes to scheduling content. It’s one of the most flexible work-from-home options out there because you can shape it around your own skills.

Typical VA work includes email and calendar management, scheduling social posts, customer service, data entry, research, bookkeeping, formatting, even graphic design. Some VAs specialize, others offer a broader mix — which makes it a good fit for stay-at-home parents, digital nomads, or anyone wanting flexible remote income.

I don’t have a VA of my own yet — it’s on my radar as the blog grows, but I’m not there yet, so I won’t pretend I’ve hired one. What I can tell you from talking to other bloggers and business owners is that a good VA becomes genuinely essential fast — not a beginner side hustle, but a role businesses come to depend on.

5. Proofreading

If you’ve got a sharp eye for typos, clunky wording, or grammar slip-ups, proofreading could be a great work-from-home fit.

Businesses, bloggers, course creators, and authors regularly need someone to check their content before it goes live. With so much being published every day — blog posts, ebooks, sales pages, newsletters — there’s steady demand for a fresh set of eyes.

Proofreading isn’t writing — it’s polishing what’s already there. That makes it a good fit for people who’d rather refine than start from a blank page.

I have a proofreader for my own content, and honestly, she’s a lifesaver. Knowing someone’s checking it before it goes live saves me real time and hassle. It’s a behind-the-scenes job that makes a bigger difference than people expect.

You don’t need a formal degree to get started, either. Strong grammar, attention to detail, and some training can turn proofreading into a flexible income you run entirely from home.

6. Online Bookkeeping

If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable with numbers, online bookkeeping is worth a look. Plenty of small businesses, bloggers, and entrepreneurs need help tracking income, expenses, and invoices — without hiring a full-time accountant.

That’s where virtual bookkeepers come in.

The job is keeping financial records accurate and current — categorizing transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing basic reports, managing invoices. It matters, because it directly affects how well a business can make decisions.

One of the best things about bookkeeping is how accessible it is. You don’t need an accounting degree. There are solid courses that teach you tools like QuickBooks or Xero, cover the basics, and get you client-ready. With practice, it can grow into a steady, full-time income.

Because books need maintaining every month, bookkeeping also tends to bring recurring clients rather than one-off jobs.

7. Print on Demand

If you like designing or coming up with product ideas, print-on-demand (POD) can be a solid way to make money online.

With POD, you create designs that get printed on things like t-shirts, mugs, phone cases, tote bags, and wall art. You don’t need to buy inventory upfront, store boxes, or handle shipping yourself.

Here’s how it works: you upload a design to a POD platform. When someone orders, a third party prints and ships it for you. You keep the margin between the base cost and your selling price.

Because there’s no bulk inventory to buy, startup costs stay low compared to a traditional product business — which makes it a fairly low-risk way to test designs and niches.

Success usually comes down to picking the right niche and designs that actually resonate — funny quotes, hobby graphics, seasonal designs, whatever your audience responds to.

It’s not fully passive — you still need to create and promote — but once listings are live, they can keep selling with fairly light upkeep.

Key Tips for Success When You Work From Home

Woman creating an organized desk setup as part of learning how to start working from home successfully.
A dedicated workspace and clear daily structure are essential when learning how to start working from home.

Going from an office to a home office is a bigger shift than people expect. No commute, no colleagues nearby, no obvious cutoff — it’s easy for “work time” and “home time” to blur together. What I’ve found is that doing well at home isn’t about working more hours. It’s about working smarter. Here’s what actually helps me stay focused:

Establish a Dedicated Workspace

Even without a spare room, pick one spot that’s just for work — a desk in the corner of a bedroom, or a section of the kitchen table. A dedicated space tells your brain it’s time to focus. Sit down there, and you’re “at work.”

Set Clear Boundaries with Family

You don’t need to wear formal clothes, but getting out of pajamas can shift your mindset more than you’d think. Even comfortable “daytime” clothes can help you feel more switched on and ready to work.

Take Intentional Breaks

One of the easiest traps working from home is either never stopping or constantly getting sidetracked. Build in real breaks instead — step outside, stretch, take a short walk, or just disconnect for a few minutes. Movement and mental breaks stop burnout and actually help you get more done.

Working from home gives you real freedom — but structure and boundaries are what make that freedom actually work.

Your Remote Journey Starts Now

If there’s one thing to take from this, it’s this: a work from home life isn’t reserved for a lucky few. It’s not just for tech insiders or people with connections. It’s for regular people willing to learn, take the first step, and build something slowly.

I started exactly where you might be right now — commuting to a 9-to-5, watching the clock, wondering if there was something more. The shift wasn’t luck. It was choosing to try. Starting the blog. Taking the freelance project. Testing the idea. Sticking with it when progress felt slow.

You don’t need to quit tomorrow. You don’t need everything figured out. You just need to start — pick one path that interests you, whether that’s blogging, freelancing, printables, bookkeeping, or being a VA, and commit to learning and taking steps forward.

The freedom and flexibility you want won’t show up overnight. But it’s genuinely achievable.

A year from now, you could still be dreading Mondays. Or you could be waking up on your own terms, building something that’s actually yours.

Your remote journey doesn’t start “someday.”

It starts when you decide this is your time.

Do you want to work from home? What’s the biggest thing holding you back?
